Volleyball (NCAA Men) (NCAA) Rules Explained

Overview

College men's teams compete in indoor volleyball, aiming to win the NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship. The season runs from January through May, with the championship contested in early May.

How to win

Section 1: Introduction

NCAA Men's Volleyball is the spring-season collegiate variant of indoor men's volleyball, contested January through May at NCAA Division I and III (NCAA Division II men's volleyball is contested as a separate level, and the National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship draws from all three divisions under a single bracket). The championship is contested in early May. NCAA Men's Volleyball uses the USA Volleyball + FIVB rule baseline with NCAA-specific modifications around set scoring caps, substitution count, libero usage, and the challenge framework, published as the 2025-27 NCAA Men's Volleyball Rules Book — a biennial USA Volleyball-base edition, refreshed each academic year by a shorter rules-modifications document (the current cycle's is the 2026-27 modifications release).

One rule clarified for the current cycle concerns the center line beneath the net: NCAA men's volleyball applies a foot-specific test — fully crossing the center line with a foot or feet is a fault regardless of whether it interferes with the opponent, while crossing with any other part of the body is not itself a fault unless it interferes with the opponent's play or creates a safety hazard (see Section 7). This foot-based standard is the same one NCAA women's volleyball adopted for its 2026-27 rules cycle to align with the men's game and with FIVB's international rule.

Section 2: Equipment

Ball: spherical, leather/synthetic, 65-67 cm circumference, 260-280 g, FIVB/Molten approved
Net: 2.43 m height (men's standard, vs 2.24 m women's), 1m × 9.5-10 m
Antennas marking the legal crossing zone
Posts 0.5-1.0 m outside sidelines, padded
Player apparel: team uniform with numbers; libero contrasting jersey
Knee pads recommended; ankle braces permitted

Section 3: Playing Area

Court: 18 m × 9 m, divided by center line into 9 m × 9 m halves
Attack line: 3 m from center line on each side
Service zone: behind end line, full court width
Free zone: minimum 3 m around court (5 m at championship)
Substitution zone between attack line and centerline

Section 4: Players & Officials

6 players on court per team; roster 12-18 D1; one or two designated liberos
Libero: defensive specialist, contrasting jersey, plays only back row, may replace any back-row player without counting against substitution limit
Substitutions: up to 15 per set (NCAA framework); substituted players may re-enter
Officials: 1st referee (R1, elevated stand), 2nd referee (R2, opposite), 2-4 line judges, scorer + assistant

Section 5: Rules of Play

Best of 5 sets
Sets 1-4: rally scoring to 25 points, must win by 2 (no upper cap)
Set 5 (decider): rally scoring to 15 points, must win by 2
Service rotation clockwise on each side-out
Serve must clear net within antennas; let serve permitted
Each team max 3 contacts before returning over net (block does NOT count as contact in indoor — different from beach)
Side-switch between sets; teams switch in set 5 at 8 points
Two team timeouts per set (60 seconds each); technical timeouts at 8 and 16 points sets 1-4
Center-line play: a player who completely crosses the center line with a foot or feet commits a fault regardless of interference; crossing with any other body part is legal unless it interferes with the opponent or is a safety hazard

Section 7: Violations & Penalties

Faults causing loss of rally: ball out, four contacts, double contact (controlled), catch/throw, hand-setting violation, net touch, antenna contact, foot fault on serve, illegal server (out of rotation)
Center-line fault (updated): completely crossing the center line with a foot or feet is a fault on contact, with no referee judgment on interference required — this is a change from the prior interference-based standard for foot faults specifically. Completely crossing the center line with any other part of the body remains legal unless it interferes with the opponent's play or endangers the opponent, in which case it is still a fault.
Misconduct: warning, penalty (yellow card), expulsion (red, out for set), disqualification (yellow + red, out for match)

Section 8: Safety Considerations

Concussion protocol: removal + graduated return-to-play assessment. Court surface and post padding inspected pre-match. Required: certified athletic trainer at every match; team physician + EMT at championship-level competition. Emergency action plan with AED access at every venue.
