The 2021 Australian Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to use Hawk-Eye Live for all matches in place of human line judges, partly in response to COVID-era personnel reductions. The decision marked a structural shift in tennis officiating that subsequent Slams followed (US Open replaced line judges with full electronic line calls in 2022; Wimbledon announced the same shift on 9 October 2024 for 2025 onward). Match-play officiating now relies on automated calls plus an umpire, removing the player-challenge mechanism at events with full Hawk-Eye Live coverage.

Following years of inconsistent final-set tiebreak rules across the four majors (Australian Open at 6-6 with a 10-point tiebreak from 2019, Wimbledon at 12-12 from 2019, French Open with no tiebreak before 2022, US Open at 6-6 with a 7-point tiebreak), the Grand Slam Board agreed in March 2022 to a single unified format: a 10-point tiebreak whenever the final set reaches 6-6, applied across all four Slams in singles and doubles (mixed-doubles excepted). The change took effect at the 2022 French Open and was incorporated into the ITF Rules of Tennis Appendix V scoring options.
