Section 6: Scoring
6.1 Judged Events (Halfpipe, Slopestyle, Big Air)
Each judge scores each run 0–100 without decimals. Any calculated score is truncated to two decimal places (ICR 3403). In the overall impression system, if there are 6 or more scoring judges the high and low scores are discarded and the remaining scores count (ICR 3403.2). The judging criteria are (ICR 3402):
- Difficulty: Complexity of tricks — number of rotations, inversions, and grabs. A 1440° (4 full rotations) scores higher than a 1080° (3 rotations).
- Execution: Clean takeoffs, controlled flight, solid landings (no hand drags, reverts, or wobbles). Grab quality — tweaked, held, and stylish versus quick or sloppy.
- Amplitude: Height achieved above the lip (halfpipe) or gap cleared (slopestyle/big air). Greater height demonstrates control and power.
- Variety: Mixing frontside and backside rotations, different grab types, regular and switch takeoffs. Repetition is penalized.
- Progression: Innovation — performing tricks new to competition or increasing difficulty from previous runs.
6.2 Big Air Multi-Run Scoring
In the best 2 out of 3 format, the two counting tricks must be different. If a competitor performs the same type of trick two or more times in the same phase, only the highest-scored one counts. If only two jumps are performed in a phase, the highest individual score counts (ICR 3502.3.1).
6.3 Race Events (SBX, PGS)
SBX: finish order in each heat decides who advances — no scoring (ICR 5407.1.1, 5502.1). PGS: in two-run finals the time differences of the two runs are added, each capped at the penalty time (ICR 6504.3.2).
6.4 Tiebreaking
In judged events, tied competitors receive the same rank. The competitor with the higher start number is listed first (ICR 3503). If riders tie for the last qualifying place, all of them advance (ICR 3503.1, 3503.2). In SBX, an undecidable finish before the small and big finals is broken by qualification rank (ICR 5407.2.1). Ties in the small or big final remain tied (ICR 5407.2.2). In PGS two-run finals, if the summed time differences are tied, the winner of the second run advances (ICR 6504.3.2).
