Foundational federation milestone. The FEI was founded following the Olympic Congress held in Lausanne, Switzerland from 28 to 30 May 1921 — establishing the international governing body for equestrian sports across the three Olympic disciplines (dressage, eventing, show jumping) plus the FEI-affiliated disciplines added subsequently. The first Olympic Games held under FEI authority were 1924 in Paris. Every modern FEI rule on dressage tests, eventing courses, show jumping technical specifications, para-equestrian dressage, and discipline-portfolio decisions descends from the rule-making mandate established at this founding congress.

Reining — the Western-style discipline involving precision pattern work, slides, and spins — was added as an FEI discipline in 2000, the first non-traditional Olympic-affiliated FEI discipline.
