Foundational competitive milestone in Dota 2's history. To ensure that enough Defense of the Ancients players would take up Dota 2 and to promote the game to a new audience, Valve invited sixteen accomplished Defense of the Ancients esports teams to compete at a Dota 2-specific tournament at Gamescom in August 2011, which later became an annually held event known as The International. The 2011 inaugural TI predates Dota 2's 2013 public Steam release by two years (the game was still in private beta), making TI one of esports' rare flagship tournaments to launch alongside an unreleased game. The International has since become the highest-prize-pool annual esports tournament in the world (community-funded via Battle Pass / Compendium contributions).

Foundational game-release milestone. Following nearly two years of beta testing, Dota 2 was released on Steam for Windows on 9 July 2013, and for OS X and Linux on 18 July 2013. The 2013 release made Dota 2 freely available globally on Steam, transitioning the game from beta-invite-only access to open public access. Every modern Dota 2 competitive convention (Pro Circuit, regional leagues, Major tournaments, The International championship cycle) has built on the post-2013-launch competitive ecosystem. The 2-year beta phase preceding launch (2011-2013) included the inaugural The International tournament at Gamescom 2011, making Dota 2 unique among major esports as a game whose flagship competitive event predates its public release by two years.

Most consequential modern gameplay-rule rework in Dota 2's history. In December 2016, Dota 2 was updated to gameplay version 7.00, also known as "The New Journey" update. The 7.00 patch introduced Talents (level-bound heroes choices replacing traditional skill-tree progression), reworked the map with new outposts and shrines, added Monkey King as the first new hero developed for Dota 2 (rather than imported from DotA Allstars), and overhauled item and ability balance. The 7.x sequence has been the active gameplay-rule framework ever since, with subsequent patches (7.20, 7.30, 7.34, 7.36) building on the 7.00 foundation. Every modern professional Dota 2 match operates under post-7.00 rules.
