Section 4: Players & Officials
Team Composition
- Standard team size: 8 to 11 players per team in the field
- Minimum to play: 5 players per team
- Maximum roster: Up to 15 players per team, with substitutions allowed
- Coed play: Kickball is frequently played with mixed-gender teams; many leagues alternate male and female kickers in the lineup
Fielding Positions
- Pitcher: Rolls the ball to the kicker from the pitching strip
- Catcher: Stands behind home plate to receive pitches and guard home base
- First baseman: Covers first base
- Second baseman: Covers the area between first and second base
- Shortstop: Covers the area between second and third base
- Third baseman: Covers third base
- Outfielders: 2 to 5 players positioned in the outfield (left field, center field, right field, and additional positions as needed)
Kicking Order
- Each team establishes a kicking order (lineup) before the game begins
- All players on the roster must be included in the kicking order
- The order must be followed throughout the game; kickers may not skip their turn
Officials
- Casual play: No officials required; players self-regulate using the honor system
- Organized play: One or two umpires may be used
- Head referee/umpire: Calls balls, strikes, foul balls, outs, and safe/out calls at bases
- Base umpire (optional): Assists with calls at the bases
